A few days ago, I heard people say that in Ponte d'arbia there is nothing. This might be quite true for some aspects.
That said, you should not be afraid to stop your walking here, in favor of more populated cities around here. You can easily find what Ponte d'arbia has to offer by googling it. If you are an adventurous pilgrim and you don't need to find out what the path has in store for you, even better. I personally believe that pilgrimage also means to accept whatever comes, with respect and hubleness.
But it is also right that everyone can do the pilgrimage as they want and according to their possibilities. On the other hand, it is not reasonable to think that every stop will be in big cities with everything you might need. Sometimes you will have to stop in very small villages and you should adapt yourselves accordingly. This is the case of Ponte d'arbia.
I tried to put here everything you might need to know about this place, the most frequently asked questions I received.
Food and beverages
The soul of the village and mandatory stop for a thirsty pilgrim is Bar H, on the main road. Here you will find sandwiches, pizzas and frozen meals. Surely the best solution if you are looking for a fast lunch or a beer after all that walking. It is also a great place for breakfast, since it opens very early in the morning (around 5). As for dinner, you will find Ristorante "Il Ponte" , next to our rooms. The restaurant offers traditional tuscany cuisine and pizzas. They also have a pilgrim menu starting from 16 euros. I reccomend to book a table on the week ends, tel 0577 806969. On thursday is closed.
If you arrive on a thursday, you can eat at "A modo mio", a small diner. Since they don't have many tables, you should make a reservation at 0577 590385.
C’è poi una buonissima rivendita di frutta e verdura biologica a km 0, la Società agricola Aiellino. Non la troverete sempre aperta, ma vi consiglio comunque di passarci.
If you need something else, you can make a short stop at Monteroni d'Arbia, where you'll find a supermarket not so distant from the Francigena path.
Nella speranza di tutti, entro un anno dovrebbe aprire un nuovo negozio di alimentari all’interno di una nascente cooperativa di comunità. Vi terrò aggiornati.
Trasport
Se cercate mezzi pubblici che vi riportino a Siena o verso San Quirico, l’unica soluzione è l’autobus. Durante la settimana potrete trovare diverse corse, soprattutto in direzione Siena. Il fine settimana, invece, ci sono pochissime soluzioni, specialmente la domenica. Vi consiglio di controllare in anticipo gli orari. Potete farlo facilmente su google maps, oppure sul sito www.autolineetoscane.it. La gestione della rete dei bus è da poco cambiata e l’unico modo per acquistare i biglietti è attraverso l’app TABNET.
A Ponte d’Arbia non ci sono stazioni. La più vicina si trova a Buonconvento.
Inoltre, per chi venisse da Siena, vi sconsiglio caldamente il taxi, che purtroppo ho visto prendere a diversi pellegrini. Vi verrà a costare veramente un’occhio della testa.
Farmacia
In piazza Bandinelli ( a pochissimi passi da noi) si trova la Farmacia Ponte d’Arbia, dove i pellegrini potranno trovare alcuni prodotti utili a prezzi scontati.
Altri servizi
Proprio accanto all’ingresso del Bar H, potete trovare un bancomat Monte dei Paschi. Nonostante il bancomat, vi consiglio di arrivare comunque in paese con dei contanti in tasca. Può succedere (ed è successo a diversi pellegrini) di trovare il bancomat fuori uso, e a quel punto avreste dei problemi. Diverse attività, infatti, non sono dotate di pos (noi sì).
Per qualche “emergenza” di stile, inoltre, a Ponte d’Arbia troverete anche un negozio di parrucchiere, “Gi-Ro testa”.
